Palmolive recently sent me details of a coupon, which can be downloaded from its website here. It’s a coupon to buy a bottle of Palmolive Hygiene Plus handwash for £1.
Palmolive Hygiene Plus has a full retail price of around £1.70 a bottle. But to be honest, I never buy handwash at full price anyway – who does? – preferring to wait for special offers or plumping for the supermarket’s super-cheap own brand, which does the same job. And what do you know, Asda is currently running a special offer on Palmolive Hygiene Plus handwash: buy three bottles for £3. Sainsburys were selling it at 87p per bottle, although that offer has just ended.
But here’s where it gets interesting…
The sleuths over on the MoneySavingExpert coupon thread have found that when the Palmolive coupon is presented at checkouts, instead of the soap being rung through at £1 per bottle, the coupon value is deducted from the total shopping bill. So if you go to Asda with three Palmolive coupons with a combined value of £3, the three bottles of handwash are effectively run through at £0…
At the time of writing, the coupons expire on 30 April 2012.
Update, 17 April 2012: Ah, it looks like you had to be quick with this one. Palmolive has now taken down the coupon and updated its website as follows:
Due to an error on a coupon inviting consumers to try Palmolive Hygiene-Plus Liquid Hand Wash for the value of £1.00, Palmolive regrets to inform consumers that this offer from today (17th April 2012), will no longer be valid for use with retailers in the UK & Ireland. Palmolive sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused to consumers.
If you wanted to take advantage of this offer, I hope you made it to Asda in time!

Many thanks for your Palmolive handwash advice – I tried it in my local Asda this am and it worked!!!I asked my favourite cashier to try the coupons and yes I got 3 bottles free! She couldn’t believe it either. It’s only good of course if you’ve got access to the internet.

Amazing! I have found another couple of ‘flaws’ in supermarket’s till systems. Tesco used to have an offer on fresh ready meals ‘Buy 2 save £2’. When these meals were reduced to 49p on the night that they went out of date, the £2 saving still came off at the till. Effectively tescos were crediting you £1.02 for every 2 reduced meals you bought! I ended up buying about 12 one night (all of them)!!
Secondly, one to watch out for is in Sainsbury’s Self Service Checkouts. When you press ‘finish and pay’ the deals do not come off. You have to click ‘back’ and then finish and pay again to total it properly!

I know this is an old post but just wanted to confirm what Scott said is correct; it works at waitrose as well. Reduced items already on offer, the reduction will come off at the till plus whatever would have come off due to the offer. Sometimes waitrose take advantage of this fact, which they are aware of. For example a couple of months ago they priced big punnets reduced strawberries that were already 2 for £4.50 in such a way that they worked out two for 98p as they were up to the display by date. They put a big sign up in the shop saying that both the original reduction and another reduction would come off so this would be the end price. They were absolutely perfect; not too ripe and lasted a couple more days, I got 8 of them. As for the handwash I remember I got 8 of those as well.
There was recently another freebie coupon with no conditions attached to it, for Heinz five beanz. For some reason not many people twigged and it was pulled after 5 days. The first few they sent links to had an expiry of November and there was absolutely no conditions on there to not store the coupon nor any restrictions on making multiple copies and the barcodes were the same on all the ones sent out. Nor have heinz made any effort to officially withdraw either version of the coupon they were giving out. We get through a lot of beans anyway so I got quite a few cans and I stored the file on my computer to print more just before it expires in November. Due to the heinz coupon, free McVities cake coupon and several unilever coupons I won from their now defunct facebook site’s monthly draw, I got over £30 worth of freebies. The shop assistant was very impressed (I’ve got good at choosing the ones who will be impressed rather than annoyed by coupons).
