Five Last-Minute DIY Gift Ideas For Mother’s Day

So, if you’re short of readies this month (or just frugally-minded!) here are some last-minute ideas for homemade Mother’s Day gifts. They are all quick, simple and inexpensive – so what are you waiting for? Whip out the pinking shears!

1. Handprint Vases

Paint an empty jam jar with enamel paint (or another suitable paint) and decorate with handprints. Remember to add flowers for the full effect! A jam jar is the perfect size for the spring flowers now coming through: snowdrops, bluebells and daffodils. The ones in the picture were made by Virginia at Blackflipflops: she painted the inside of her jars and handprinted on the outsides (see the comments on her original post for more information) but I think you can do it either way.

2. Peppermint Creams

You will need icing sugar, condensed milk, chocolate – and a pretty box! No cooking required. You can find the recipe at Great British Chefs.

3. Cookies

Think about words that describe your mum – smart, exciting, loved and so on – and ice them onto cookies. Pile them up in a big jar. You can find the recipe at i am baker, along with more pictures and ideas for words.

4. Coupons

Ah, that old standby! This is a free printable, and you can download the template at Homemade Gifts Made Easy.

5. Breakfast in bed!

Isn’t this awesome? It is bacon and eggs, with pastry and a fruit salad. You can find the recipes and how-tos on the Hungry Happenings blog. The recipes are all straightforward. Beth at Hungry Happenings uses silicon daisy moulds, flower-shaped cutters and flower stamps, but I don’t think you need to go out and buy all of these things if you don’t already have them: the pineapple and melon flowers can be cut out with a small knife, and the flower can be hand-painted onto the pastry.
